Special Diets and Food Allergies
Managing food allergies in schools can be challenging. Education, communication, and cooperation are the keys to preventing allergic reactions in schools. Because food allergies could result in potentially life threatening anaphylaxis, it is important for parents/guardians to inform school food service employees, so everyone understands their role.
School district staff work together to protect student's from potential allergic reactions. Here are the steps we follow:
- The process starts when parent/guardian contacts the school nurse to complete an allergy action plan
- The school nurse sends the allergy list to the kitchen manager and an alert will be entered in the Point of Sale System
- Each time the student comes through the line, an alert symbol will appear on the student's meal account
- Together, the cashier and students must check the student's tray to be sure he/she does not have an item they are allergic to
Lactose milk will be made available upon written request from parent/guardian.
Peanut and Tree Nut Allergies
- Peanut butter sandwiches are served prepackaged to prevent cross contamination
- All bakery items received, including sliced bread for sandwiches and toast, hamburger buns and hot dog buns, are manufactured in a tree nut and peanut free facility
- For all other items on the menu, it's recommended the parent or guardian email Amy Kimmel at email@example.com to determine if a food is "safe" for their child to eat
- Families are always welcome to provide lunch from home for their student

Nutrislice is our online menu program. Parents and students have access to see what's for breakfast and lunch. An added feature to the program allows for us to identify the top 8 allergens found in our products. This is a great resource for students and parents to use to determine if a food is safe to eat.
