Board Highlights – April 11, 2017 Regular Meeting

The Spring Lake Park School Board held a regular meeting on Tuesday, April 11. Here are the highlights from the meeting:

Bond Refunding Update – Amy Schultz, director of business services, and Jodie Zesbaugh, Ehlers Inc., presented information on a bond refunding opportunity. The bond refunding, similar to refunding a home mortgage, would result in a reduction in property taxes for local residents.

#SLPPantherProud Project Update – Bob Noyed, director of communication, and Tara Cegla and Coley Fehringer, communication specialists, presented an update on the #SLPPantherProud project, which is part of the District Operational Plan. The update included an overview of the district’s new mobile app and the recently-released district promotional video. Click here to view the presentation from the meeting.

Other Action – The board took action on the following items:

  • Awarded the bids for construction of the new preK-4 elementary school, as presented
  • Approved a resolution for the sale of general obligation school building refunding bonds
  • Approved a motion declaring May 1-5, 2017, as Staff Appreciation Week in Spring Lake Park Schools
  • Approved the second reading of the following revised board policies:
    • 501, School Weapon Policy
    • 514, Bullying Prohibition
    • 515, Protection and Privacy of Pupil Records
    • 516, Student Medication
    • 521, Student Disability Nondiscrimination
    • 522, Student Sex Nondiscrimination
    • 524, Technology Responsible Use and Safety
    • 526, Hazing Prohibition
    • 532, Pledge of Allegiance
    • 534, Use of Peace Officers and Crisis Teams to Remove Students with IEPs from School Grounds
  • Approved the second reading of the following new mandatory policy:
    • 721, Uniform Grant Guidance
  • Approved the first reading of the following revised policies:
    • 503, Student Attendance
    • 508, Extended School Year for Certain Students with Individualized Education Programs
    • 509, Enrollment of Nonresident Students
    • 513, Student Promotion, Retention and Program Design
    • 517, Student Recruiting
    • 518, Do Not Resuscitate/Do Not Intubate (DNR-DNI)
    • 519, Interviews of Students by Outside Agencies
    • 527, Student Use and Parking of Motor Vehicles, Patrols, Inspections and Searches
    • 529, Notification of Staff Regarding Placement of Students with Violent Behavior
    • 530, Immunization Requirements
    • 535, Wellness
  • Approved the first reading to delete the following policies:
    • 504, Student Dress and Appearance
    • 505, Distribution of Non-school-Sponsored Materials on School Premises by Students and Employees
    • 507, Corporal Punishment
    • 510, School Activities
    • 512, School Sponsored Student Publications
    • 523, Policies Incorporated by Reference
    • 525, Violence Prevention
    • 528, Student Parental, Family and Marital Status Nondiscrimination
    • 531, Prohibition of the Use or Possession of Alcohol, Tobacco or Controlled Substances by Students Participating in School District Athletic Activities
    • 533, High School Student Honors and Recognition
  • Authorized the issuance of a procurement cards to district employees, as presented
  • Approved a motion to acknowledge gifts to the district as submitted, and extend the board’s thanks and appreciation

The board approved a motion to enter in to a closed session to discuss employee negotiations and the sale of property by the district.
