Discovery Days Child Care, Ages 3-5

 

Discovery Days offers kindergarten readiness for your child and child care while you work.

The program prepares children for kindergarten by integrating literacy, math, science, social studies, art, social/emotional development, and physical development throughout its curriculum activities.

Discovery Days follows the school-year calendar, except we remain open on most days that school is closed.

Who: Children who are 3- or 4-years old by September 1 of the 2020-2021 school year

When: Open 7 a.m.–5:30 p.m. on school days and most non-school days from September 8, 2020 – June 10, 2021 (dates subject to change)

Where: Conveniently located at our Early Childhood Centers at Centerview Elementary and the District Services Center

Flexible Scheduling: Three to five days per week, Monday through Friday. Full-day (7 a.m.-5:30 p.m.) and Partial-day (9 a.m.-4:00 p.m.) options are available.

Breakfast, Lunch, and Afternoon Snack:  Breakfast and lunch are provided by SLP Schools' Nutrition Services Department on school days. When school is not in session, a bag lunch and beverage from home will be needed.  Breakfast on non school days and all afternoon snacks are provided by the Discovery Days program.

Non School Days:  Most days when school is closed, Discovery Days is still open for care. Care and activities are offered on the following dates:  October 12-15, December 4, 7, 28-31, February 11-12, March 12, 15-19, and 22. These dates are NOT part of your regular contracted care. Families must register for the dates as needed. All care on Non School Days is provided at the Centerview location. A bag lunch and beverage from home will be needed.  Breakfast on non school days and all afternoon snacks are provided by the Discovery Days program.

Discovery Days Program Rates:

  • Five days a week: 
    • Full Day (7 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.): $240 per week
    • Partial Day (9 a.m. – 4 p.m.): $215 per week
  • Three or Four Days a Week:
    • Full Day (7 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.): $60 per day
    • Partial Day (9 a.m. – 4 p.m.): $55 per day 

Registration: Registration for our Discovery Days program opens on Monday, February 3. Our spaces fill quickly. Do NOT wait to register if you would like a spot in our program. Current families will receive priority from February 3 through February 14.

Starting on or about February 15, registrations will be reviewed in the order that they were received by our online system. In order for a registration to be processed, all Community Education program balances must be paid in full. Accounts with a balance overdue will not be processed.

Our Child Care programs have a limited number of full-time and part-time spots. Upon confirmation by our registration staff that there is a spot for your child, the registration will be processed and the registration fee will be collected. Registrants will receive an email confirmation that the registration is complete.

Program Details

Summer 2020 Discovery Days

Preschool: Full-time or part-time, open 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m. for children who will be at least four years old on September 1, 2020 and who are toilet-trained.

Pre-Kindergarten: Full-time or part-time, open 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m. for children who will be at least five years old on September 1, 2020 and who are toilet-trained.

When and where: Tuesday, June 9 – Friday, August 28 (closed Friday, July 3) at Park Terrace Elementary School, 8301 Terrace Road, Spring Lake Park

Program hours: 9 a.m.-4 p.m. (participants break into home-room groups for daily activities)

Drop-off: 7-9 a.m.; Pick-up: 4-5:30 p.m.

W.O.W: Students will enjoy several “Wheels on Wednesday” events by blocking off a parking lot to ride our wheels! Your children may bring their bikes, scooters, rollerblades or anything with wheels!

Breakfast, Lunch, and Afternoon Snack:  Breakfast and lunch are provided by SLP Schools' Summer Food Program, Monday through Thursday. A bag lunch and beverage from home will be needed on Fridays (and on some field trip days during the week).  Friday breakfast and all afternoon snacks are provided by the Discovery Days program.

Weekly Special Events: Our summer will be exciting with on-site events and a few off-site field trips. Participants are provided with a t-shirt to wear on all field trips for quick identification when exploring new places. All events are included in tuition.

Eligibility: Discovery Days - Summer Session is open to children age 4-6 years who attended our 2019-2020 school-year program and have not yet entered kindergarten.

Contract options and rates for summer 2020 (open for care from 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m.)

  • Full-time Care (7 a.m.-5:30 p.m.): Minimum of 43 days - $48 per day
  • Part-time Care (7 a.m.-5:30 p.m.): 25 to 42 days - $60 per day
  • Part-time Care (7 a.m.-5:30 p.m.): Less than 25 days - $65 per day 
  • Partial Day options (9 a.m.-4 p.m.): $43 and $55 per day (partial day less than 25 days is not available)

Summer Olympics

The 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, are from July 24 to August 9, 2020. A few months before the games, the Olympic Flame Relay will start in Olympia, Greece, where the inspiration for today's Olympic Games originated. Summer students and staff will engage in activities to learn about the history, events, countries, traditions, and more, of the Olympic Games. In addition to these activities, we will challenge our minds and bodies to grow stronger with academic enrichment opportunities, outdoor games, walking trips and bus field trips to a variety of exciting, fun sites.
