A flurry of activity flowed in and out of the high school’s auxiliary gym for the annual spring career fair. Some students roamed in groups while others opted for one-on-one conversations with targeted career partners. All left with a little more knowledge – and some swag – from career sectors that await them now and in the future.

The 3D Student-designed objects for How To Make Almost Anything, one of the most popular courses at Spring Lake Park High School, are appearing. The Technology, Engineering and Design elective within the Career and College Pathways offerings provides a jumping off point for students to explore careers as they learn.

It only took one class during junior year through Opportunities in Emergency Care to steer Anas Sumrin’s future direction. Last year, he became an Emergency Medical Technician – a certification he earned at Spring Lake Park High School. Now, as a senior, Anas is interning at the Fridley Fire Department where he takes a primary role in patient care on medical calls.

Spring Lake Park High School juniors and seniors pitched their business ideas “Shark Tank style” to a panel of local judges. We caught up with the five finalists to learn more about their product or service, how this class is helping them think about their future and what it’s like to pitch their ideas to business experts. 

Julian Christensen and Trevon Holeman started their senior year unsure how to get a job and gain experience within the career path they want to pursue after graduation - mechanics. After understanding and taking advantage of the resources available to them through the Spring Lake Park High School Career and College office, both students now have a part-time job at Heartland Tire.

Senior Maria Mora-Pena has discovered a passion for medicine and wants to pursue a career in healthcare after she graduates high school next spring. To help her achieve this goal, she has gone deep into the Health and Human Services Pathway at Spring Lake Park High School, taking many courses that align with her emerging interests.

Spring Lake Park High School is celebrating College Knowledge Month throughout October. With Minnesota colleges and universities there are a number of special events happening throughout the month to support students in applying for college.

Last fall, senior Owen Adwan was encouraged to attend an apprenticeship open house for Bühler Group. Now, he is part of a two-year apprenticeship program where he works hands-on, will earn an associate's degree and graduate debt free. Hear from Owen how his time at SLP prepared him for this opportunity.

Students like junior Anthony Philavanh are exploring careers that align to their hobbies and interests through pathways classes at Spring Lake Park High School. Through the Technology, Engineering and Design (TED) pathway, Anthony has explored a growing interest in computer science.
