Woodcrest kindergarten teacher Lina Mraz helping a student with his school work

Lina Mraz

Woodcrest Spanish Immersion

Kindergarten teacher

What year did you start working in Spring Lake Park Schools?
As a kindergarten teacher, I've been working at SLP for five years. As a Spanish speech clinician consultant, I've worked with the district for seven years.

Why did you choose to join Spring Lake Park Schools?
Due to the need for the district to test the growing Spanish-speaking students in speech, I started working for the district as a consultant. Five years ago, Principal Linares approached me and asked if I would consider teaching a kindergarten class. With my background in early education, I was extremely excited about the opportunity!

What's the best part of your day, as an employee of Spring Lake Park Schools?
The best part of my day is spending time with my students! It fills me with joy and energy to see their happy faces as they enter the classroom. They are all so excited and eager to start their day!

What do you do when you're not at work?
I really enjoy spending time with my family. We love to travel together. Reading and watching documentaries about science and history are also things I like to do in my free time. Also, I am a huge Apple fan! Finally, I really enjoy creating new materials to use in my classroom.

How do you personalize learning for students?
First, I put a lot of effort into getting to know my students and building positive relationships with them and their families. Then, I build a positive classroom community and teach the students to feel comfortable being independent learners. I look at the evidence of learning and what they need to learn. By collecting data and making careful observations, in a variety of ways, I personalize learning by creating materials in math and reading for each student to work at their independent levels either by themselves or with small groups. It is very important for me that the students use tools for self-evaluation and know what they need to do in order to continue their learning.

What makes you #SLPPantherProud?
I am #SLPPantherProud because the Spring Lake Park School community works extremely hard and is very committed to creating the best learning experience for all of our students.
