Whether they pursue further education, a career or trade, task a role with the military or do something else altogether, these students have been an invaluable part of our Panther community. We know they will go on to do great things.

We have asked our graduating seniors to share their plans for the future, favorite experiences and what makes them Panther Proud. In the coming weeks, we will continue to share student spotlights as we celebrate the Class of 2021.

What was your favorite high school class? My favorite class is Calculus. I have loved my advanced math classes with Mr. Hilst, and you can regularly find me competing for the Spring Lake Park Math Team. We even went to State this year. Go Panthers!

What was your favorite high school experience? My favorite experience was Choir’s trip to New York City. I have been in Ms. Phelps’s Choir class since sixth grade and I was overjoyed to spend time exploring the Big Apple with my classmates. We enjoyed multiple Broadway musicals, worked with clinicians, performed at beautiful locations, and ate some exceptional food. (I highly recommend “$0.99 Pizza” in Times Square!)

What activities were you involved in while you were a student at Spring Lake Park High School?

  • Soccer, Captain
  • Panther Mentors, House Leader
  • Math Team
  • Classical Piano
  • Choir
  • Parkairs
  • Theater
  • National Honor Society
  • Triple “A” Award recipient

What were you involved in outside of school? Outside of school, I spend my time coding. I received a scholarship to participate in Kode with Klossy, a non-profit program that teaches teenage girls to code. Last summer, I coded the first iteration of an environmentalism iPhone app entitled EarthDay365. This summer, I am employed as an Instructor’s Assistant for this program and I will be teaching the Swift coding language. I recently received a National Certificate of Distinction from the National Center for Women in Information Technology for my Aspirations in Computing.

What are your plans after graduation? After graduation, I will be attending the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin—Madison.

What makes you SLP Panther Proud? I am #SLPPantherProud because I love seeing our dancing Panther mascot as I cheer on my classmates on a Friday night. I love seeing our favorite teachers get involved in the staff skit at homecoming pep-fests. I love supporting our fine-arts department at their concerts or shows. I even love losing the teachers vs. students basketball game. I was always eager to put on my soccer jersey or walk into school on a High-Five-Friday (pre-COVID, of course).

What was your favorite high school experience? My best experience was during the 2019 graduation when I played in band. At first, I wasn’t thrilled because it was above 100 degrees that day and the humidity was going to mess up my curly hair! Ms. Tycast had explained that there would be a euphoric feeling in the air as the seniors walked across the stage, but I was skeptical of this. As we started to play Pomp and Circumstances, I felt the feeling of accomplishment, and although I was only a sophomore, I couldn’t wait till I achieved such a high honor.

What activities were you involved in while you were a student at Spring Lake Park High School?

  • National Honor Society, grades 11-12
  • Ambassador program, grade 12
  • Jazz band, grades 9-10
  • Band, grades 9-11

What are your plans after graduation? I plan to attend the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and major in biology.

What makes you SLP Panther Proud? There are many things that make me Panther Proud. But, for me, the biggest thing is the focus on academics. The amazing teachers at Spring Lake Park High School have given me so much knowledge and I am so grateful for the effort they put in every day to help me grow.

What was your favorite class and/or experience? While I’ve had many fun classes over the years, my favorite memories are from choir with Ms. Phelps. Choir provided me with a number of unique opportunities and great friendships throughout all four years of high school. My favorite memory from my time there has to be traveling to New York City in March 2020. Getting the chance to travel the city and perform with my closest friends, especially right before lockdown, was an unforgettable experience that I will treasure for many years to come.

What activities were you involved in while you were a student at Spring Lake Park High School? I played volleyball and basketball all four years of high school, along with performing in theater and various show choir groups (including the lovely Parkairs). I was also involved in the Panther Mentor program, National Honors Society, and College and Career Ambassadors. For Panther Mentors, I had the privilege of being a House Leader for the 2020-21 year. In performing arts, I was an all-conference choir member and featured soloist at Northwest Suburban Choir Contest as well as the female lead in the spring musical “Spamalot."

What are you plans after graduation? After graduation, I plan to major in Animation & Digital Media at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. In the future, I hope to work in storyboarding or illustration.

What makes you #SLPPantherProud? I am proud to be part of a community that provides so many extracurricular opportunities for students K-12. While education is obviously important, I feel that the connections people make in activities outside of class is what makes the SLP experience truly amazing. I am extremely grateful for every teacher, coach, and staff member who helped me pursue my (many) passions, and I hope that every future SLP student can find their own special community by getting involved.

Mackenzie Monsrud

What was your favorite class and/or experience? My favorite experience during high school was traveling to Cuba with the band program. Being immersed in a different culture was an incredible opportunity and I was able to partake in it with some of my favorite people. My favorite class was definitely Mr. Stephenson's 4th hour AP World in junior year. We were always laughing and it was consistently a positive environment.

What activities were you involved in while you were a student at Spring Lake Park High School?
I chose to do as many extracurriculars as I possibly could during high school. I have been on the track team since eighth grade. I have been a part of six theater productions here at the high school, two of which I was the student director for. I was on the math team from 10th-12th grade and was captain my senior year. I have been on student council for all four years, where I was the Historian for my junior year and the Vice-President my senior year. I have been in band and pep band for all four years. I was a member of the National Honor Society during my junior and senior years. I was also involved in the Panther Mentor program for both my junior and senior years and was a House Leader senior year. Outside of school, I took piano lessons, volunteered at my church's youth group and attended youth group.

What are your plans after graduation? After graduation, I am planning to take a gap year. For six months of that gap year, I will be attending a Bible School in Germany. I am not sure what I will be doing after that, but I am excited for whatever it may be!

What makes you #SLPPantherProud? I am Panther Proud because Spring Lake Park has provided me with numerous opportunities to grow as both a person and a student. Throughout my educational career, I was surrounded by incredibly supportive staff and teachers. Everyone I have encountered has been encouraging and supportive of me and my goals. They always made me feel capable and never hesitated to remind me of my strength and resilience. The staff also took the time to get to know me as an individual. In the classroom, teachers emphasized character growth and modeled the importance of teamwork and motivation. I will forever be grateful for those life lessons as they will continue to be valuable in my future.

Spring Lake Park also gave me the chance to get involved. I had the opportunity to be an active member of seven different clubs and activities in high school. Each one helped me to develop unique skills and push me out of my comfort zone. I was able to step into leadership roles in many of those clubs. By being in those positions, I was able to fine-tune skills like communication, encouragement, and organization. I am eternally thankful that I got the chance to be a part of such a wonderful community.

Josh Nygaard

Class of 2021 senior Josh Nygaard

What was your favorite class and/or experience? My favorite experience in high school was participating in the boys’ swim team. Participating in athletics has not only helped me grow as an athlete but as a person and in the confidence of myself. Through the tough exercises and the numerous personal records, I learned that I am capable of so much more than I had previously thought. I learned that I can pursue just about anything if I really put my mind and prayers into it. Though my time in high school is coming to an end, the pursuit of my CS degree had just begun.

What activities were you involved in while you were a student at Spring Lake Park High School?

  • Swim and Dive (9-11)
  • National Honor Society (12)
  • Leo’s Club (11)
  • Panther Mentors (11-12)
  • A Honor Roll (10-12)
  • Band (9-10)

What are your plans after graduation? I will be attending Michigan Technological University’s college of computing as I major in computer science with a focus on game development.

What makes you #SLPPantherProud? Throughout my time in the Spring Lake Park School district, I’ve learned so much not only about the subject material, but about myself as a person and the kind of person that I can be capable of becoming if I really put my mind into it. The teachers and staff surrounding me were all tremendously supportive and were always there to cheer me on. They helped me back up when I fell down. They were always willing to listen to whatever I had to say. They were eager to know a lot about me and my goals in order to help me accomplish them. The amount of encouragement and support I received over the years was absolutely incredible and something I will never forget. I cannot even start to thank the staff enough for all they do for the community.

The importance of getting involved with leadership and other student activities is something that I had neglected until I started participating in them. These activities were designed to push me out of my comfort zone and to keep me motivated to continue participating. I especially enjoyed being involved with the Panther Mentor program because I greatly enjoyed deploying my leadership skills and supporting other students. Leadership is something that I greatly value and it is something that I hope to hold on to even in college.

I am so incredibly thankful for having the opportunity to be a part of a tremendously supportive community. I am forever grateful for the things I got to do and the people I have encountered.

What was your favorite class and/or experience? I have had so many amazing classes throughout my time in high school, but one of my all-time favorite classes was chemistry with Ms. Enstad. The class itself was very hands-on; we learned through interesting lab experiences that engage critical thinking and relate to current real-world applications. Ms. Enstad made the class fun and interesting to be in, which made the class all the more appealing. She takes time to help each and every one of her students, while also challenging them, but it's done in such an exceptional manner. The beauty of chemistry is that it is simply all around us, and is one of the reasons why it was one of the subjects I enjoyed the most.

One of my favorite experiences in high school was being a part of the Student Council. Student Council truly gives you the opportunity to foster skills like leadership, communication, teamwork, organization, and public speaking, all of which you need to succeed in life. However, the planning that goes behind each event we host is what makes it the highlight of my years in high school. Whether it's planning pep fests or school dances, or even after-school poster decorating, the memories and relationships I have built are truly unforgettable.

What makes you #SLPPantherProud? I am SLP Panther Proud because of the many opportunities presented to me throughout my years in high school. SLP has given me the opportunity to pursue my passions and discover my true potential. I have also been fortunate enough to be a part of a growing community committed to making a positive difference in the world. The wonderful community we have here, including all the teachers who devote their time to ensure their students succeed, along with the garlic cheese bread, makes me proud to be a Panther!

What was your favorite class and/or experience? My favorite experience was when I qualified for my state speech competition my sophomore year. Having all of my and my teammate’s hard work manifest into this ultimate success was very gratifying. Celebrating with my teammates on the bus ride home was definitely my favorite part of the day. Nothing can replace or replicate that feeling of community and shared joy I felt then.

What are your plans after graduation? In the fall I plan to attend Harvard University with a joint concentration in Sociology and Statistics. After college, I plan on attending Law School.

What makes you #SLPPantherProud? What makes me SLP Panther Proud are definitely the teachers. I entered Spring Lake Park Schools my sophomore year as a shy, quiet 14-year-old whose only wish was to become invisible. Luckily my teachers believed in me before I believed in myself and through their constant guidance and empowerment, I was able to grow into a young woman who’s not afraid to use her voice to advocate for the issues she cares about. Without the educators SLP has brought into my life, I would not be the person I am today and for that, I’m constantly grateful to belong to this community.

Sean Erdahl

What was your favorite class and/or experience? I’d have to say my favorite class in high school was AP World History with Mr. Stephenson. Although being one of the hardest classes I’ve taken, Mr. Stephenson knew how to engage the class while having a good time. Not to mention, it also helped that I had a lot of friends in that class. We may have gotten on Mr. Stephenson’s nerves from time to time, but I’m glad he put up with us because it was a class I will always remember.

What activities were you involved in while you were a student at Spring Lake Park High School? I was a swimmer on the Varsity Swim and Dive team and was part of the school’s band throughout high school. I played for the school’s “Green Sky” Ultimate Frisbee team my freshman and sophomore years and this year I joined Student Council and became a member of the National Honor’s Society. I also received the Triple A Award this year, which I am truly appreciative of.

What are your plans after graduation? In the fall, I will be attending the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and I plan on majoring in pre-dentistry or a related field.

What makes you #SLPPantherProud? I am SLP Panther Proud because the school district has provided me with a lot of the tools, resources, and education I need to succeed in life, as well as being a district comprised of many great teachers and staff.

Not only did I learn so many things that I implement in my learning and life today, but the teacher, Ms. Prince, who taught it was such a great influence and the best teacher I have ever had. The class taught me how to analyze and comprehend, but also how to take a step back and look at the big picture, which are all things that now influence my daily life. Ms. Prince made the class accessible to all students, while also making it interesting, which is why it is my favorite class.

All of the teachers, students, and counselors helped me on my journey to finding myself and succeeding and I couldn't be more glad to consider myself a Panther. I am also Panther Proud because despite all my setbacks and obstacles, I have grown stronger and that is all thanks to the staff at SLP, which have helped pick me up when I was down and as a result of that I am indeed Panther Proud.

Alina Schenk

What was your favorite class and/or experience? I have a tie between my two favorite classes. The first class was history/economics with Mr. Stephenson. His class was for sure one to remember. It was such a fun and engaging class that I looked forward to every day. He always made it a point to make real connections with every student. The other class was senior year environmental science with Mr. Stern. This class not only was super interesting, but Mr. Stern made this class engaging and fun for everyone. I definitely will not forget the lasting impressions made from either of these teachers or classes.

My favorite high school experience was all of the trips we made to State on the dance team. This experience was one I will never forget. The dance team has been a huge part of my high school career and it has definitely shaped me into the person I am today. Thank you to my coaches and teammates for your hard work and dedication. It was by far my highlight of High School!

Maya Dempsey

Class of 2021 senior Maya Dempsey

What was your favorite class and/or experience? My favorite experience throughout high school was making connections with the staff and my classmates. A lot of my teachers were wonderful in helping me throughout my four years of high school and it didn’t stop after I left their class. In my experience, my teachers really want to see their students succeed and do great things in their future and so building those experiences and connections in the classroom was extremely helpful. Also, the memories made with my classmates in the classroom whether it be group work or helping each other outside of school made it worth the four years of hard work.

What makes you #SLPPantherProud? What makes me Panther Proud is the diversity of our school.  The diversity that our school has to offer carries throughout the entire building. Students feel safe and at home within these four walls. Anyone could see that all of our students have a teacher or a classroom that they can go to and feel welcomed and comfortable and I know not a lot of other schools can say the same.
