Lori Henry has been named the 2020-2021 Minnesota Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (MAFCS) Teacher of the Year.

Lori is in her 36th year of teaching with the Spring Lake Park Schools district. She currently teaches Culinary Arts 1 & 2 at SLPHS and is the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) chapter advisor.

“I am so honored to have been selected as the MAFCS Teacher of the Year,” says Lori. “My passion for family and consumer sciences (FCS) curriculum started with my own baking experiences with my mother and my high school FCS teacher, Stephanie Meinke. Growing up, I took every class offered in FCS and it made me to want to pursue this area and become a teacher. I enjoy working with teenagers and seeing them learn, grow and develop skills they’ll use throughout their lives.”

SLPHS senior and National President of FCCLA Supriya Patel says her teacher and advisor is more than deserving of this award because of the time and effort she puts into every single student, activity and class.

“She is committed to FCCLA and FCS education in a way that is truly admirable,” says Supriya. “She recognizes the potential of every student she crosses paths with and does everything she can to help them grow as an individual. Without her, I would not be where I am today. Without her, I would not be serving as FCCLA’s National President.”

Lori will receive her MAFCS Teacher of the Year Award at a local conference in February and will be recognized at the national conference held in Minneapolis at the end of June. She also intends to apply for the 2021 National Teacher of the Year which will be award next spring.
