Just days away from the Spring Lake Park High School (SLPHS) R&B Hip Hop Revue Band Showcase Concert, high school bands and jazz ensembles and guest artists from the Minneapolis’ Hip Hop industry have been hard at work rehearsing to create a unique and powerful concert.
SLPHS band students will be joined by guest artists Ashley DuBose, Cameron Kinghorn, members from the Slo Dance Company and Joshua Holmgren, an SLP alum who has arranged the music for the concert and is producing the overall performance.
“Working with Joshua Holmgren, as a producer and musician in the Twin Cities, has allowed each student to find their voice in this particular concert,” said SLPHS band teacher Nora Tycast. “He has given so many students an opportunity to explore this music in such a powerful and meaningful way.”
This concert came to fruition after students expressed a desire to have a more modern Showcase Concert and learn how to play a different style of music.
I think it is extremely powerful for our students to see Hip Hop music being held up to other art forms. It is one of the most popular forms of music in the U.S. and until now, it has not had a place for performance or exploration in the concert band setting. SLPHS band teacher Brian Lukkasson
While rehearsing, Holmgren took a moment to give the students some inspiration for the big night, saying “The moment when we all come together on stage, there’s nothing like that. All of this hard work we are putting in is leading up to that moment, so continue putting in the work, and most of all, enjoy it.”
The Showcase Concert will take place Monday, October 7 at 7 p.m. in the SLPHS Fine Arts Center, 1100 81st Avenue NE, Spring Lake Park, MN.
