Academic Support

By personalizing learning for each student, teachers Westwood Intermediate and Middle School are able to know each student by name, strength, interest and need. Our personalized learning efforts include providing additional support to students who may need extra help.

Westwood has several academic specialists who work along with classroom teachers to meet the needs of each student. Rather than being assigned to a specific classroom, academic specialists provide support to every classroom in the school. Academic specialists typically work with small groups of students to improve their reading and math skills. Academic specialists, in consultation with the classroom teacher, can focus on particular learning for each student and to provide the support each student needs.

Students in grades 7-8 who may be struggling with language arts or math have the opportunity to enroll in a Bridge class for language arts and/or math. Bridge classes provide students with additional time and support to improve reading, writing and math skills. Students enrolled in a Bridge class are also enrolled in a mainstream language art or math course. Instruction in the Bridge class reinforces skills and concepts introduced in the mainstream class, and allows students to preview upcoming materials in order to gain familiarity with new concepts and skills.
