Hannah and Sophia Anderson posing with their HOSA medals

Hannah and Sophia Anderson represented the Spring Lake Park High School Opportunities in Emergency Care (OEC) program at the 42nd Annual Health Occupations Students of America International Leadership Conference (HOSA ILC) in Orlando, Florida in June, earning OEC their third world championship in four years.

In order to qualify for the HOSA ILC, the Anderson sisters placed second in First Aid/CPR and third in Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) at the HOSA State Leadership Conference this spring.

At the HOSA ILC, individual members and teams demonstrated their skills in a series of competitive events designed to recognize the competencies developed by members through class instruction, related job training and activities. The Andersons were one of only 25 teams to pass the round one written exam and move onto round two. In round two they worked together to demonstrate their skills in a simulated emergency situation. They placed first out 87 high school teams in the EMT category.

“I am very proud of these kids,” said OEC teacher Bill Neiss. “I cannot tell you how much work these two put in for this achievement.”

This was the largest HOSA ILC to date, with over 11,000 attendees and 9,750 competitors competing in 60 events.

In the past four years, Spring Lake Park High School’s OEC program has earned three world championships at the HOSA ILC. In 2016, the team of John Herman and Morgan Soencksen placed first in EMT; in 2017, Autumn Tally and Andrew Olson placed first in EMT; and in 2018 we had two teams place third and eighth in EMT.
