The Spring Lake Park Schools Math Team recently won the section 7AAA championship, narrowly beating Blaine 348-333 over the span of five meets for the section title.

The team also beat Irondale, Andover, Coon Rapids, Anoka and Roseville.

“The entire team was dedicated to working hard this year,” said SLPHS math team advisor Matt Eggert. “The varsity squad scored 104 more points this season than last year, which is 20.8 more points per meet or 2.6 points more per team member per meet.”

In addition, SLPHS senior An Trinh and Lighthouse School eighth grader Sasha Levinshteyn will represent the team at the individual state competition.

To help get the team the section 7AAA championship, Trinh, who came in second place in the competition, led the team with 58 individual points, which is his third straight year over 50 points, and places him third on SLP’s all-time individual points lists with 210 points.

“Levinshteyn was close behind Trinh with 52 points, and came in third place in the competition,” Eggert said. “She is only in eighth grade and is already at 104 career points and could smash the SLP record before she graduates.”

An and Levinshteyn were joined by senior Nelson Weniger and freshman Mark Gustafson, both tying for fifth place, in the top 10 section finishers.

The team will compete in the state competition on March 11 where they will attempt to improve upon their current ranking of 10th in the state. An and Levinshteyn will also compete in the individual state competition on March 11.
