The two Triple "A" Award winners for 2021 smiling

Seniors Megan Mulrooney and Sean Erdahl were nominated for the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Academics, Arts and Athletics Triple “A” award.

High schools across Minnesota can nominate two students for the MSHSL Triple “A” award. To qualify, students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, participate in MSHSL athletics and fine arts activities and comply with the MSHSL Student Code of Conduct.

Through a multi-level selection process, the top four Triple “A” finishers will receive a four-year $1,000 scholarship from the MSHSL. From there, one female and one male will be announced at the Triple “A” banquet in conjunction with the Minnesota State Boys Basketball Tournament in March.

Megan Mulrooney

Megan has excelled in and outside of the classroom throughout her time at Spring Lake Park Schools and is thrilled to have been chosen as a Triple “A” award winner.

“Being the winner of the Triple “A” Award is incredibly meaningful for me because I have worked very hard to balance my activities throughout high school” says Megan. “I have enjoyed every minute I have spent in choir, playing soccer and learning from Spring Lake Park School’s amazing teachers.”

Meagan has been involved in choir throughout her middle and high school career and also participated in Parkairs, a small singing group that meets before school. She is a member of the National Honors Society, the Panther Mentors club, the Math Team and has been very involved in the theater program and performed in all of the musicals throughout her high school career. She also directed a middle school fall play.

She played soccer all four years of high school where she earned four varsity letters and served as captain for two years. She is also a member of the Blaine Soccer Club where she had the opportunity to travel to various competitions around the country and was a part of the team crowned champions of the USA Cup in 2016 and 2017.

Outside of school, she takes classical piano lessons, participates in Kode and Klossy, a coding program for girls interested in STEM, and holds a job at Dairy Queen.

“Megan is a consummate role model,” says Stephanie Phelps Johnson, Spring Lake Park High School choir teacher. “She is known by all, staff and students included, as an outstanding leader and she has a deep desire to learn new things. She strives to always have a positive attitude and goes out of her way to help others, especially students who might feel like outsiders.”

After graduation, Megan plans to attend the University of Wisconsin – Madison to pursue a degree in Chemical Engineering as well as join the school’s intramural soccer team and choral ensemble.

Sean Erdahl

Student-athlete Sean Erdahl has been involved in a variety of arts, athletics and academics during his time at Spring Lake Park High School and credits his involvement in these areas to his overall positive development as a student and person.

“My involvement in the arts has helped develop me as a person by improving my overall well-being,” says Sean. “My involvement in athletics has contributed to my growth as a person by strengthening my mental capabilities. And my involvement in academics has allowed me to grow as a person by facilitating my mind to think in new ways outside of school.”

Sean has been involved in band since he was in 5th grade, has participated on the Panther Boys’ Swim and Dive team all four years of high school and has taken a number of Honors, Advanced Placement (AP) and College in the Schools Concurrent courses.

“I have had Sean in my class for the past four years as a percussionist,” says Nora Tycast, Spring Lake Park High School band director. “During his four years, Sean has shown growth in his musicianship, comportment and academic investment. Sean’s work ethic, attention to detail and willingness to be a dedicated part of the team are to be celebrated.”

After graduation, Sean plans to attend the University of Minnesota Twin Cities where he will pursue a degree in psychology or pre-dentistry.

Congratulations, Megan and Sean!
