SLPHS senior Devin Mulrooney's smiling next to a pond
What grade did you start attending SLP Schools?
Kindergarten

What activities were you involved in while you were a student at Spring Lake Park High School?
Soccer, Band, Math Team, Panther Mentors, National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

What teacher or teachers have had the biggest impact on your educational journey and why?
Nora Tycast and Brian Lukkasson. I have spent everyday in band with both of them since I was a freshman. They have taught me how to take risks and how to believe in myself. As teachers, they pushed me to be a better musician and better student. They understand the challenges of balancing academics and activities and they make every effort to help students along the way. My favorite teaching techniques of theirs involves taking a band room full of vocally ungifted students and making them sing out parts. For some strange reason, we all enjoy it, but the choir kids next doors are plugging their ears.

What are your plans after graduation?
I am deciding between St. John's University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I plan to major in Environmental Science.

How has Spring Lake Park Schools prepared you for your future?
Spring Lake Park High School has offered me a positive learning environment where I have been able to explore my interests academically through clubs and activities. I have taken advantage of a wide variety of classes, many earning my college credits. The school is filled with teachers who are always willing to go extra mile for you. SLPHS offers an Environmental Science class. I was lucky enough to take the class as a senior and realize how passionate I am about the subject. Getting involved in athletics and activities has also provided lots of opportunities for me to grow. I am excited for college and I am looking forward to emailing Mr. Hilst when I actually use my knowledge of differentiating complex equations.

What advice do you have for incoming ninth grade or students new to Spring Lake Park High School?
As a senior completely on the slide, I do realize how quickly high school has gone by and I have learned a few things along the way. Choose good friends. Go to school dances, sporting events, concerts and theater performances. If there is a pick-up game at Able, drop your backpack and play. When you're parking by the pool doors, plan your exit strategy carefully. And finally, always become friends with the smartest kid in the class!

What makes you SLP Panther Proud?
I have three reasons that I am SLP Panther Proud:
  1. The cafeteria's delicious Cinnamon Apple Sauce.
  2. High Five Friday.
  3. We beat Irondale at almost everything.
