Why Should Learning be Personalized?
Many students today see learning as something they do for adults. If we change their relationship to learning, redefining it as an authentic experience they are inspired by, they can take ownership of their learning. Why is this important? Because we want our students to become enthusiastic, life-long learners and critical thinkers.
The design of the current education system dates back to the late 1800s, when the innovation of the time was the moving assembly line. Promoted by people like Henry Ford and other innovators of the day, they needed a workforce that could tolerate the conditions of the assembly line, where workers could perform repetitive tasks for long periods of time in boring situations.
Some students today would say that’s what school feels like.
Many students have benefited from this system for more than a century, but this system has not worked for all learners, and it does not position learners for the world of the future they are entering into. We need a new system that considers the needs of each learner, and to do that, we need a new design.
