1/17/09 Varisty Game vs Benilde St. Margaret
--submitted by George Zurbey
The girls played Benilde on Saturday afternoon. Benilde came into the game leading the conference with a perfect conference record. In fact, since they joined the North Suburban Conference they have a perfect record with the exception of one tie so the task at hand was formidable.
The Panthers came out strong and controlled play early on. As the first period progressed, the action was energetic and exciting but nobody could put the puck in the net. The first period ended in a 0 0 tie. The second period was much the same as the action went back and forth but again neither team could put the puck in the net. The Panthers killed off a penalty to start the third period and had some very good scoring chances after that, but they failed to connect. With eleven minutes remaining in the game, Benilde finally broke the scoring drought and went ahead 1 0. Two minutes later they scored again. Unfortunately, Benilde would go on to score six goals in the last eleven minutes of the game to win 6 0. The final score was not indicative of the play on the ice as this game was much, much closer than the final score. The Panthers gave it all they had and came up short Saturday afternoon, but they left it all on the ice as their effort was all that it could be.
The loss ended a five game winning streak and leaves the Panthers in third place in the conference behind Benilde and Irondale. 1/13/09 Varsity Game vs Cooper

Courtney Nelson continued her scoring streak with a goal and Katie Turner, Allison Jones and Karissa Thomsen also added goals. Haley Nelson had the shutout stopping a first period breakaway and another point blank one timer amongst her saves.
The win leaves the Panthers overall record at 8-8-1 and their conference record at 5 -2 good for third place as they start the second round of conference play this Saturday against Benilde. 1/9/09 Varsity Game vs St. Francis

The Panthers traveled to the St Louis Park Rec Center to take on St Louis Park in a North Suburban Conference game. St Louis Park scored on its first shot on goal to take the early lead. Captain Laura Randall evened the score when her shot hit the far post and went in. The first period ended in a 1 1 tie. St Louis Park opened up the scoring in the second period with three consecutive goals prompting a goaltending change on the part of the Panthers. The move seemed to wake up the Panthers. After having a goal waved off, Alex DeBoer scored on the power play to bring the Panthers to 4 2. Kelsey Young added a tally to make the score 4 3 before St Louis Park added a goal to make it 5 3. Gina Zurbey then took over scoring a goal to make the score 5 4 heading into the third period. Zurbey proceeded to tie the score in the third period and then gave the Panthers the lead as she completed a pure hat trick. 12/19/08 Varsity Game vs Irondale
--submitted by George Zurbey The Panthers took on their highflying rivals from Irondale in a game at Fogerty Arena last night. The Panthers welcomed back Kayla Jochum and Allison Jones to the lineup and an impressive group of alums from prior years teams. Irondale started the scoring in the first period with a power play goal as the Panthers continued their season long issue of taking unnecessary penalties. The Panthers killed off a two player advantage but could not kill off the second penalty as Irondale took a 1 0 lead into the second period. Irondale made it 2 0 five minutes into the second period. On the power play, Alex Deboer took a pass from Karrissa Thompson and shot from the point. The shot deflected off of traffic in front of the net and in, to bring the Panthers to within one. Twenty seconds later the score was tied, when Kayla Jochum put in the rebound of a shot by Gina Zurbey. Undaunted, Irondale scored two minutes later, as the tired Panthers could not clear the puck from their zone giving the Knights a 3 2 lead going into the third period. Early in third period, Irondale scored the last goal of the game, when their forward whacked the stick of a Panther defender with the puck popping the puck into the net. Haley Nelson played a good game in goal, the Panther defenders deflected numerous shot attempts by the Knights, and the forwards got some good pressure on the Knight defense in a well played, fun game to watch.
12/15/08 Varsity Game vs Totino Grace --submitted by George Zurbey On Saturday evening, the Panthers went to the Parade Ice Gardens to take on Totino Grace in their second conference game of the year. The Panthers were without their top two centers, both of whom were out with injuries. One minute into the game Allie Chapman knocked in a rebound to put the Panthers up 1 0. The assists on the goal went to Kelly Evertz and Karissa Thompson. The Panthers continued their strong play in the first period, but could not add to the score. In the second period the momentum swung on penalties and Totino Grace put pressure on the Panthers. Goalie Katie Bassett came up big a couple of times in the period, making a nice save and then diving across the crease to thwart a rebound attempt during one flurry in front of the net. The period ended scoreless as the Panthers took a 1 0 lead into the third period. The intensity level increased as both teams tried to gain the advantage. The Panther defense, anchored by Courtney Nelson and Caitlin Spaniol held strong as both Grace and SLP shuttled players in and out of the penalty box. As the game wound down, the Panthers took one last penalty with about 20 seconds left in the game. Grace pulled their goalie to give them a six on four player advantage. The Panthers were able to tie up the puck along the boards for most of the 20 seconds and came away with a 1 0 win. The win evens the Panther conference record at 1 1.
12/12/08 Varsity Game vs Champlin Park --submitted by George Zurbey The Panthers headed out to Champlin Park for a non-conference game against the Rebels. The Panthers came out skating hard on the Olympic sized rink and may have played their best period of hockey in the first period, taking a 1 0 lead when Katie Turner deflected a shot from the point past the goalie on the power play. The second period was well played by both teams. Champlin Park capitalized on a power play late in the second period to tie the game at 1 heading into the third period. The Rebel goalie stopped a number of good scoring chances in the third period. The Panthers then took two penalties and the Rebels took advantage, scoring the winning goal while the Panthers were two players short. Champlin added an empty net goal with 25 seconds remaining to make the final score 3 1.
12/10/08 Varsity Game vs St. Louis Park --submitted by George Zurbey The Panthers opened conference play at the Rec Center in St Louis Park against the defending conference champions from Benilde. The Panthers came out of the gate slow giving up a power play goal on a long shot and a tap in goal from right in front of the net. At the first intermission, the score was 2 0. After a strong penalty kill early in the second period, the Panthers gained some momentum and the flow of the game evened out. Both teams were scoreless in a well-played second period. That momentum continued into the third period. After killing off a penalty, Kayla Jochum was stopped on a partial breakaway. Undaunted, she retrieved the puck skated out front and scored to make it a 2 1 game. The Panthers continued to push Benilde, barely missing wide on several shots in an attempt to tie the game. On the power play, the Panthers turned the puck over and Benilde scored on a short handed breakaway to make it 3 1. They added an empty net goal to make the final 4 1. The Panthers played two solid periods of hockey, but could not overcome the first period deficit.
12/5/08 Varsity Game vs Andover --submitted by George Zurbey The Panthers took on section foes Andover last night. The first period was a well-played, fast paced, and good hockey. The Huskies of Andover came away with a 1 0 lead when they tapped in a loose puck from the crease. The second period remained scoreless. In the third period, the Panthers came out strong and controlled play. At about the seven-minute mark, Ashley Moore poked home a rebound of an Alissa Chapman shot to knot the score at 1-1.
