Preschool/School Readiness

Preschool/School Readiness Programs

School Readiness is a public school program open to all
Minnesota children ages 3 years to kindergarten enrollment.

The goal of School Readiness is to help preschoolers enter school with the skills
and behaviors necessary to be successful in future learning. Preschool is a place
where young children can meet and interact, feel safe away from their parents,
learn and have fun!

Using School Readiness funding, District 16 has offered for many years two quality programs---"Learn & Play Preschool"and "Preschool Partners".

New for 2010-11 is a Preschool class "Vamos de la Mano Escuela Preescolar"
specifically for children for whom Spanish is their first language.

  • Licensed teachers, who have at least a four-year college degree, make learning fun through creative experiences that teach skills in math, science, literacy, social interactions and the arts.
  • All District 16 School Readiness classes use the Houghton-Mifflin Pre-K curriculum. This curriculum is aligned with the district's kindergarten goals.
  • Parent involvement is a part of the School Readiness program. Research has shown that early childhood programs where parents and children work together are more effective than programs that only focus on the child.
  • Two or three days-a-week are offered in the morning or afternoon at both Woodcrest and Northpoint. A four-afternoons-a-week class is offered at Woodcrest.
  • Preschool classes are held at both the Early Childhood wing of Woodcrest Elementary School, 880 Osborne Road NE, Fridley, MN 55432 and at Northpoint Elementary School, 2350 124th Court, Blaine, MN 55449. We offer a sliding fee scale based on income and family size for all School Readiness classes.
  • All School Readiness classes provide inclusion for children with special needs.
  • Children enrolled in 2010-2011 classes must be 3-5 years old, as of September 1, 2010.

2010-2011 Preschool Classes
Classes will be held at both Woodcrest Elementary and at Northpoint Elementary. There is sliding fee scale assistance available for all Preschool classes. School-year Preschool classes require a $40 registration fee. Child must be the required age by September 1, 2010.
